Cooling Mixer
A horizontal or vertical cooling mixer that brings hot PVC dry blend from the heating turbo mixer down to storage temperature without lumps; for new lines or as a stand-alone unit next to your existing heating mixer.

Highlights
What does a cooling mixer do?
PVC dry blend is prepared in a heating turbo mixer, which warms it by friction. The blend leaving the heater is hot, and left standing it forms lumps, the additives stick together and it loses its free flow. A cooling mixer keeps the hot blend moving and brings it down to a temperature suitable for storage and feeding, so the dry blend does not bridge in the silo and flows steadily to the extruder.
In hot-cold mixer lines the heater and cooler work together: while the heater prepares the next batch, the cooler cools the previous one. The size and efficiency of the cooler therefore directly affect the number of batches per hour.
A cooling mixer on its own
Erk PVC Makine builds cooling mixers as part of complete hot-cold mixer sets and as a stand-alone product. The most common reasons are:
- Next to an existing heating mixer: the heater is in good shape but cooling cannot keep up and batches wait in the cooler.
- Capacity increase: a larger cooler lets the heater run more batches.
- Replacement: replacing a worn or inefficient old cooler.
- Layout change: moving from a vertical to a horizontal cooler, or the other way round.
A stand-alone cooler is engineered around your heater’s discharge height, connection points and plant layout.
Horizontal or vertical?
| Horizontal cooler | Vertical cooler |
|---|---|---|
Layout | Below the heater, horizontal vessel | Below the heater, vertical vessel |
Strength | Large jacketed surface, lump-free cooling of large batches | Smaller footprint |
Typical use | High-output profile and pipe lines | Mid-sized lines, limited space |
Erk series |
The choice is explained in detail in horizontal or vertical cooler mixer.
How it works
- Discharge: when the heating mixer reaches its target temperature, the blend is discharged into the cooler.
- Cooling: cooling water in the vessel jacket takes away the heat while a slow agitator keeps the blend moving, so every particle meets the cool surface.
- Onward: once at target temperature, the blend goes through a powder sieve to a silo or buffer hopper, and from there by flexible screw conveyor to the extruder hopper.
What to consider
- Heater batch size: the cooler must take a full heater batch comfortably.
- Target hourly output: cooling time must not limit the number of batches. See PVC mixer capacity calculation.
- Cooling water: the temperature and flow of your plant’s cooling water affect cooling time.
- Recipe: plasticised and highly filled recipes behave differently.
- Layout: the heater’s discharge level, existing platform and maintenance access.
Installation and after-sales
Cooling mixers are built at our factory in Ergene, Tekirdağ. The connection to your existing heater is planned on site; installation, commissioning, operator training, remote support and spare parts are provided. Send us your heating mixer’s make, model and batch size and we will define the right cooler with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy a cooling mixer on its own?
Yes. Erk builds cooling mixers as part of complete hot-cold sets and as a stand-alone product, engineered around your existing heater’s discharge height and your layout.
Can an Erk cooler be installed under another make of heating mixer?
That depends on the heater’s discharge outlet, level and batch size. Send us your mixer details and layout drawing and we will assess the connection with you.
Should I choose a horizontal or a vertical cooler?
A horizontal cooler suits large batches and high output; a vertical cooler suits plants with limited floor space. The choice depends on capacity, recipe and layout.
What happens if the cooler is undersized?
If the blend leaves before it has cooled enough, it lumps in the silo and stops flowing well; if the cooler finishes late, the heater has to wait and hourly output drops.
