What is a horizontal turbo mixer for PVC?
Mixing is the first and most critical step in PVC processing. PVC resin has to be combined with stabilisers, fillers (calcium carbonate), impact modifiers, lubricants and pigments into a free-flowing powder — dry blend — before it can be extruded. The EPM-H horizontal turbo mixer is a hot-cold mixer (heating-cooling mixer) that does this in two stages: a high-speed heating mixer on top and a horizontal cooling mixer below.
The horizontal configuration makes the difference on the cooling side. The hot blend discharged from the heater is kept moving by a slow agitator inside a horizontal vessel with a large jacketed surface, so even large batches cool down evenly and without lumps.
In the field these machines are often simply called a horizontal mixer or a horizontal-cooler turbo mixer. How to choose between a horizontal and a vertical cooler is covered in our article horizontal or vertical cooler mixer.
If you only need a cooler for your existing heating mixer, the cooling mixer is also available on its own.
How it works
- Dosing: PVC resin and additives are weighed according to the recipe and charged into the heating mixer — manually or fully automatically with an automatic powder dosing system.
- Frictional heating: The high-speed impeller heats the material through friction. In typical PVC applications the blend reaches about 110–125 °C, distributing stabilisers and lubricants evenly over the resin particles.
- Discharge and cooling: At the target temperature a pneumatic valve discharges the blend into the horizontal cooler, where chilled water in the jacket brings it down to about 40–50 °C. Meanwhile the heater starts the next batch.
- Feeding: The cooled dry blend goes to a silo or intermediate hopper and on to the extruder via a flexible screw conveyor.
Because heating and cooling run in parallel, the EPM-H series achieves 4–6 batches per hour.
EPM-H model range
The Technical Specifications table above compares the five models: batch capacity (150–500 kg PVC + additives), heater and cooler volumes and motor ratings. Two figures drive model selection:
- Hourly dry blend demand: batch size × batches per hour must exceed what your extruders consume.
- Recipe type: highly filled or plasticised formulations affect motor rating and impeller choice.
Share your current and planned number of extruders, products and recipe, and we will size the line with you. How model, materials and automation affect the price is explained in our PVC mixer price guide.
Why a horizontal cooler?
- Even cooling of large batches: the horizontal body spreads the hot material in a thin layer over the cooling jacket.
- Lower installation height: needs less headroom in the mixing room than vertical coolers.
- Easy cleaning and maintenance: large covers give quick access for colour or recipe changes.
If floor space is tight, compare the EPM-V vertical turbo mixer series.
The right impeller for rigid and soft PVC
The heating mixer's impeller has the biggest influence on blend quality. Erk PVC Makine uses different blade geometries for rigid profile and pipe compounds and for plasticised cable, hose and film compounds. Impeller choice affects heating time, energy consumption and the bulk density of the dry blend. Worn blades can be replaced with original mixer blades from stock.
Applications
EPM-H mixers prepare raw material for:
- PVC window and door profiles, curtain rails and cable trunking
- PVC sewage and pressure pipes, garden and irrigation hoses
- PVC cable and cable compounds
- PVC flooring, film, tarpaulin and waterproofing membranes
- Wood-plastic composite (WPC) panels
A complete line, from dosing to the extruder
Erk PVC Makine does not build extruders — we design and install everything in front of the extruder: raw material dosing, hot-cold mixing, moisture extraction (EPM-JET filter), sieving and extruder feeding. One supplier for the whole upstream line removes interface problems between machines and shortens commissioning.
Installation, training and after-sales
Our mixers are manufactured, tested and shipped from our factory in Ergene, Tekirdağ. Our commissioning engineers work on site in Türkiye and abroad, train your operators and provide remote technical support. Spare parts and blades are available directly from our service team.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does one batch take in the EPM-H horizontal turbo mixer?
The EPM-H series runs 4–6 batches per hour. The actual cycle depends on the recipe, the target temperature and the cooling water temperature. Send us your formulation and we will estimate the cycle time.
Which model do I need for my hourly dry blend demand?
Multiply the batch capacity (150–500 kg) by the number of batches per hour to estimate hourly output. We recommend leaving headroom for future extruders; our engineers will help you choose.
When is a horizontal cooler better than a vertical cooler?
A horizontal cooler is the better choice for large batches, plants with limited ceiling height and high-output lines that need fast, even cooling. For a more compact layout, consider the EPM-V vertical series.
Do you ship and install mixers overseas?
Yes. Erk PVC Makine has supplied lines to more than 46 countries. Our engineers handle installation, commissioning and operator training on site, followed by remote support and spare parts supply.
What affects the price and lead time of a PVC mixer?
Price depends on model size, motor rating, materials, automation level and any dosing or feeding equipment in scope. Lead time depends on the order; request a quote for current pricing and delivery.
